Why book direct
The room is the same. So are the bed, the view and the breakfast. What changes is the path your money takes and who you talk to when plans shift.
Where the money goes
When you book through a platform, the lodging pays it a commission that’s usually around 15 % of the price of the stay, and sometimes more if it wants a better spot in the results. On a five-night stay, that can be almost a whole night that leaves town.
When you book direct, that share stays with the lodging. In a town like El Chaltén or El Calafate, where many lodgings are run by families who live there, it makes a difference: it’s money that stays in the place.
Who you talk to
If you’re arriving late, if you need to leave your backpack while you go up a trail, or if you want to change a night because bad weather is coming, you talk it over with the person who’s hosting you. Not with a form or a call center in another country.
In Patagonia, where the weather changes plans, that closeness is worth more than anywhere else.
What to check before you pay
- That the page is secure: the address starts with https and the browser shows no warnings.
- The cancellation policy, in writing, before you enter your card.
- What the price includes: breakfast, taxes, and whether there’s a surcharge for paying by card.
- A real contact: a phone number or WhatsApp you can write to if something isn’t clear.
If you’re a foreigner traveling in Argentina: there’s a rule that exempts lodging from VAT (IVA) for foreign tourists who pay with a card or a transfer from abroad. Ask the lodging whether it applies before you pay.
Questions
Is it more expensive to book direct with the hotel?
Usually not. Many lodgings charge the same price on their website as on the platforms, and some give something extra to people who book direct: a better price, breakfast or more flexibility. It’s worth comparing.
Is it safe to book on the lodging’s website?
Yes, if the website uses a well-known booking system and the page is secure (it starts with https). On each lodging’s page we tell you which system it books through when we know.
What if I need to cancel?
The lodging’s cancellation policy applies, and you should read it before you pay. The advantage of booking direct is that you talk it over with them, and there’s often more room to move dates than through a platform.
Why do hotels prefer that you book direct?
Because every booking that comes through a platform costs them a commission, usually 15 % or more of the price of the stay. On top of that, the platform keeps the relationship with the guest.
